The Complete Travel Size Toiletries Checklist

The Complete Travel Size Toiletries Checklist

The 3-1-1 rule isn't complicated, but packing the right products in the right sizes for the right climate is where most travelers fall short. This checklist covers everything.

Quick Take

The rule: All liquids 3.4oz or under, in one clear quart-sized bag, one bag per person.

What most people miss: Climate matters as much as size — packing efficiently with the wrong products for your environment means you're still arriving unprepared.

The Complete Travel Size Toiletries Checklist

Packing toiletries is the part of travel prep most people think is simple—until they're at security pulling out a full-sized conditioner, or they land in a dry climate with a routine designed for home. This checklist is designed to fix both problems.

Below is a full breakdown of what to pack, organized by category, with TSA rules and climate-specific considerations built in.

TSA Basics: What You Need to Know Before You Pack

The 3-1-1 rule: Each liquid, gel, aerosol, cream, or paste must be in a container of 3.4 oz (100ml) or less. All containers must fit in a single clear, quart-sized zip-top bag. One bag per passenger.

What counts as a liquid: Shampoo, conditioner, face wash, moisturizer, foundation, tinted SPF, hair gel, dry shampoo (aerosol), mascara, lip gloss, eye drops.

What doesn't count as a liquid: Solid shampoo bars, deodorant sticks, lip balm sticks, pressed powder makeup, loose powder dry shampoo.

In checked luggage: Full-sized products are allowed, but if you're doing carry-on only, everything liquid must follow the 3-1-1 rule.

The Checklist: Hair

[ ] Shampoo (travel-sized, 3.4 oz or less)

[ ] Conditioner (travel-sized, 3.4 oz or less)

[ ] Leave-in conditioner or hair repair treatment

[ ] Dry shampoo (powder for carry-on; aerosol is 3-1-1 compliant in travel size)

[ ] Hair ties, pins, clips

[ ] Travel hair tool if needed — voltage-compatible or dual-voltage

[ ] Microfiber hair towel (optional, saves space vs. hotel towels)

Climate note: Humid climates = lightweight conditioner, volumizing dry shampoo. Dry climates = hyaluronic acid formulas, hair repair treatment. Cold climates = protective oils, anti-static spray.

The Checklist: Skincare

[ ] Cleanser (travel-sized)

[ ] Toner or essence (travel-sized, if part of your routine)

[ ] Serum (travel-sized)

[ ] Moisturizer (travel-sized)

[ ] SPF — every destination, every day

[ ] Eye cream (if part of your routine)

[ ] Facial oil (for dry or cold climates especially)

[ ] Lip balm or treatment

Climate note: Dry climates = creamy cleanser, hyaluronic acid serum, richer moisturizer. Humid climates = gel cleanser, water-based or milky moisturizer (no heavy creams). Cold climates = barrier-protecting oil as a final step.

The Checklist: Body

[ ] Body wash or cleansing bar

[ ] Body lotion or oil (travel-sized)

[ ] Deodorant (stick preferred for carry-on)

[ ] Shaving cream or gel (or swap for a bar soap that doubles)

[ ] Razor

The Checklist: Dental and Oral

[ ] Toothpaste (travel-sized)

[ ] Toothbrush (or travel-sized electric head)

[ ] Floss

[ ] Mouthwash (small bottle or dissolvable tabs)

The Checklist: Miscellaneous

[ ] Pain reliever (ibuprofen, acetaminophen)

[ ] Allergy medication if needed

[ ] Band-aids

[ ] Hand sanitizer (travel-sized, counts as liquid)

[ ] Feminine hygiene products if applicable

[ ] Contact lens solution + case if applicable (counts as liquid)

[ ] Prescription medications (in original containers, separate from 3-1-1 bag)

The Bag Itself

This matters more than most people realize. A clear, structured TSA-compliant bag gets you through security faster (no unpacking to find things), keeps products organized and upright so they don't leak, and makes inventory obvious—you can see at a glance if you're missing something.

Every Wanderous bundle includes the Wanderous Carry On Cosmetic Bag—a clear, satin-trimmed case that's TSA-sized and built for repeat travel. But any clear, structured case works.

The Shortcut: Pre-Built Climate Kits

If you'd rather have the hair and skincare portion handled for you, Wanderous bundles are built around your destination's climate:

The BALANCE Bundle

For moderate climates and city stays: keratin hair care, multi-use balm cleanser, lightweight day cream. Works for most European city trips, the Pacific Coast, or anywhere with temperate conditions.

The REFRESH Bundle

For humid destinations (tropical, coastal): rosemary mint hair care, volumizing dry shampoo, lightweight skin hydration. Perfect for the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, Central America, or the Gulf Coast.

Cosmetic products including bottles and a pouch with 'Wanderous' branding on a white surface.

The SHIELD Bundle

For cold and windy destinations (winter travel, mountains): rose oil hair care, rich facial oil, barrier-protecting cleanser. Designed for Scandinavia, mountain destinations, or northeastern winters.

Each bundle is $59, cruelty-free, and arrives in a TSA-compliant clear bag. The hair care and skincare included are selected specifically for the climate you're packing for—so you land with a routine that already makes sense for where you are.
